Welcome to “Spirals and Medusas: An AI Art Exploration”

Introduction to the Project

After some initial disappointing attempts at generating pentagons and heptagons, I asked DALL-E to create spirals. The results were satisfying, and the complexity of the creations inspired me to have DALL-E interpret the spiral as the face of Medusa. The astonishing results sparked a considerable number of variations on the theme.

First Experiences with Spirals

Having just confirmed that DALL-E was incapable of generating a single regular pentagon or heptagon, I decided to test its ability to generate simple spirals. The outcome was interesting, though they were far from “simple” spirals.

Interest in Pencil Drawing

To achieve a simple spiral, I specified using a black pencil on white paper. DALL-E surprised me again with the beauty of the spirals produced, none of which were simple spirals. These images inspired me to ask the AI to interpret the spiral as the face of Medusa. The initial results were exhilarating.

Project Evolution

I then reset the goal: to produce variations on the theme of Medusa. The series of images produced was exceptionally satisfying.

The Medusa Series

Here are some images from the series, each linked to the site page that reproduces it in medium-large format and accompanies it with suitable critical text.

Reflections and Implications

Collaborating with DALL-E is an extraordinary creative experience. Following my initial prompt, the images produced inspire creative paths that are often far from those originally conceived. But there is no constraint: the change of direction is based solely on the fascination with the images produced by the AI.

During the journey into the unknown, the images that strike me the most are saved for publication on the site. The journey ends when I think of starting a completely new one. In this way, the adventure continues indefinitely.
